Depth 6 to 8; head 3 to 4; eye 5 to 8 in head, 12 to 134 in snout, equals interorbital. Scales 60 to 64 in lateral line, 5 or 6 above, Dorsal rays 12, anal 8 or 9, pectoral 12, ventral 8. Dusky above, below yellowish to white. Dark cross bands on back and sides, often with paler centers. Head with dark blotches and jaws barred. Fins, except anal and ventral, with rows of dark spots or cross bands. Length to 266 mm.

Body elongate, partly cylindrical. Head small, depressed. short, pointed. Eye moderate, with moderate adipose eyelids. Mouth very wide, with long slender premaxillary. Teeth in several irregular rows, un- equal, pointed, depressible, more or less curved; 2 bands on cach side of palate, inner much shorter and outer of 1 or 2 rows. large, membranes free. Branchiostegals 13 to 16. Scales cycloid, moderate. Opercles and postocular region scaly. Lateral line axial, more or less keeled along tail. Dorsal premedian. Adipose fin short. Anal far postmedian, below adipose fin. Caudal forked. Pectoral inserted above middle in body depth, rays 12 to 15. Ventral rather close behind pectoral, rays 9, inner rays longer.

Depth 7 to 9; head 378 to 41⁄4; snout 4 to 4 2/5 in head; eye 8 to 9, adipose lids narow; premaxillary 11⁄2 to 1 3/5. Scales 48 to 54 in lateral line, 4 above, 5 below. Dorsal rays 11; anal 10; pectoral 14 with length 1 1/5 in postocular or 14/5 in head. Dull brown, silvery to yellowish or whitish below. Dorsal, caudal and pectoral brown, tipped with dusky. Anal and ventral pale yellowish to whitish. Said to reach 610 mm.
